This is a list of America’s most destructive storms. The USA territories of Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands are included. Also the state of Hawaii is included. Damage is in American Dollars. * means the storm was a major storm at one time in its lifetime (category 3 or higher). Note a lot of storms also impacted other countries but I will only list their American landfalls and the damage they did to just America.
1. *Katrina- (2005) $100 Billion. Katrina made landfalls in Louisiana and Mississippi as a category 3 hurricane with winds of 125 mph. Katrina also made landfall in Florida as an 80 mph category 1 hurricane. Katrina at its peak had been a category 5 hurricane with winds up to 175 mph
2. *Sandy (2012) $70 Billion. Sandy made landfall in New Jersey as a 90 mph category 1 hurricane, though some sources state that Sandy was sub-tropical when it made landfall. Sandy had been a category 3 hurricane at its peak with winds up to 115 mph
3. *Ike (2008) $32 Billion. Ike made landfall in Texas as a category 2 hurricane with winds up to 110 mph. Ike was at category 4 hurricane at its peak with winds up to 145 mph
4. *Andrew (1992) $26.50 Billion. Andrew made landfall in Florida as a category 5 hurricane with 165 mph, which was the storms peak. Andrew also made landfall in Louisiana with 115 mph winds as a category 3 hurricane
5. * Wilma (2005) $20.60 Billion. Wilma made landfall in Florida as a category 3 hurricane with winds at 125 mph. Wilma had been a category 5 at its peak with winds up to 185 mph
6 *Charley (2004) $17.50 Billion. Charley made landfall in Florida as a category 4 hurricane with winds at 145 mph, which was the storm’s peak intensity. Charley also made landfall in South Carolina as a category 1 hurricane
7. *Ivan (2004) $17 Billion. Ivan made landfalls in Florida and Alabama as a category 3 hurricane with winds up to 120 mph. Ivan at its peak had been a category 5 hurricane with winds up to 165 mph
8. *Irene(2011) $14 Billion. Irene made landfall in North Carolina as a 90 mph category 1 hurricane, then New Jersey as a 75 mph category 1 hurricane. Irene at its peak had been a category 3 hurricane with winds up to 115 mph
9. *Rita (2005) $12 Billion. Rita made landfall in Louisiana as a 115 mph category 3 hurricane. Rita at its peak was a category 5 hurricane with winds up to 180 mph
10 * Hugo (1989) $10 Billion. Hugo made landfall in Puerto Rico as 125 mph category 3 hurricane, then it made landfall in South Carolina as a 140 mph category 4 hurricane. Hugo at its peak had been a category 5 hurricane with winds of 160 mph
11. *Frances (2004) $9 Billion. Frances made landfall in Florida as a category 2 hurricane with winds up 105 mph. Frances had been a 145 mph category 4 hurricane at its peak
12.* Jeanne (2004) $7 Billion. Jeanne made landfall in Florida at peak strength which was a 120 mph category 3 hurricane
13. Allison (2001) $5.5 Billion. Allison was only a tropical storm at peak strength but it caused severe flooding damage in Texas were it made landfall as 60 mph tropical storm
14.* Isabel (2003) $5 Billion. Isabel made landfall in North Carolina and Virginia as a 105 mph category 2 hurricane. Isabel had been a 165 mph category 5 hurricane at its peak
15. *Georges (1998) $5 Billion. Georges made landfalls in Puerto Rico as a 110 mph category 2 hurricane and later Mississippi as a 105 mph Category 2 hurricane. At its peak Georges was a 155 mph category 4 hurricane
16. *Gustav (2008) $4.8 Billion. Gustav made landfall in Louisiana as a 105 mph category 2 hurricane. Gustav at its peak was a 150 mph category 4 hurricane
17. *Floyd (1999) $4.40 Billion. Floyd made landfall in North Carolina as a 105 mph category 2 hurricane. Floyd at its peak was a 155 mph category 4 hurricane
18. *Opal (1995) $3.90 Billion. Opal made landfall in Florida as a 120 mph category 3 hurricane. Opal at its peak was a 150 mph category 4 hurricane
19. *Fran (1996) $3.30 Billion Fran made landfall in North Carolina at peak strength which was a 120 mph category 3 hurricane
20. * Alicia (1983) $3 Billion. Alicia made landfall in Texas at peak strength which was a 115 mph category 3 hurricane
21. *Frederic (1979) $2.4 Billion. Frederic made landfall in Alabama as a 125 mph category 3 hurricane. Frederic had been a 135 mph category 4 hurricane at its peak
22. Isaac (2012) $2.3 Billion. Isaac made landfall in Louisiana at its peak which was an 80 mph category 1 hurricane
23. *Dennis (2005) $2.3 Billion Dennis made landfall in Florida as a 120 mph category 3 hurricane. Dennis at its peak was a 150 mph category 4 hurricane
24. * Iniki (1992) $2.2 Billion. Inki made landfall in Hawaii at peak strength as a 135 mph category 4 hurricane
25. *Luis (1995) $2 Billion. Luis impacted the United States Virgin islands as a 135 mph category 4 hurricane, its winds at its peak were 145 mph
26. Agnes (1972) $2 Billion. Agnes made landfall in Florida at its peak which was an 85 mph category 1 hurricane, then Agnes made landfall in New York as a tropical storm
27. *Marilyn (1995) $1.7 Billion. Marilyn made landfall as a 100 mph category 2 hurricane in the United States Virgin Islands. Marilyn at its peak was an 115 mph category 3 hurricane
28. *Bob (1991) $1.5 Billion Bob made landfall in New England as a 105 mph category 2 hurricane. At its peak Bob was a 115 mph category 3 hurricane
29. Juan (1985) $1.5 Billion. Juan made landfall in Louisiana at peak strength as a 85 mph category 1 hurricane
30. *Camille (1969) $1.45 Billion. Camille made landfall in Mississippi at peak strength which was a 190 mph category 5 hurricane
31. *Betsy (1965) $1.45 Billion. Betsy made landfall in Florida as a 120 mph category 3 hurricane, then Louisiana as a 135 mph category 4 hurricane. Betsy was a 155 mph category 4 hurricane at its peak
32. Dolly (2008) $1.4 Billion. Dolly made landfall in Texas as a 100 mph category 2 hurricane which was its peak strength
33. *Elena (1985) $1. 3 Billion. Elena made landfall in Mississippi at peak strength which was a 125 mph category 3 hurricane
34. Lee (2011) $ 1 Billion. Lee made landfall in Louisiana at its peak which was a 70 mph tropical storm. Lee caused a lot of flood damage
35. *Lili (2002) $1 Billion. Lili made landfall in Louisiana as a 90 mph category 1 hurricane. Lili at its peak had been a 145 mph category 4 hurricane
36. *Bonnie (1998) $1 Billion made landfall in North Carolina as a 110 mph category 2 hurricane, it had been a 115 mph category 3 hurricane at its peak
37. *Gloria (1985) $1 Billion. Gloria made landfall in North Carolina as a 110 mph category 2 hurricane then New York as a 100 mph category 2 hurricane. Gloria at its peak had been a 145 mph category 4 hurricane
38. *Allen (1980) $1 Billion. Allen made landfall in Texas as a 115 mph category 3 hurricane. Allen at its peak had been a 190 mph category 5 hurricane
39. * Celia (1970) $930 Million, Celia made landfall in Texas at peak strength which was a 125 mph category 3 hurricane
40. * Donna (1960) $900 Million, Donna made landfalls in Florida as a 140 mph category 4 hurricane, North Carolina as a 110 mph category 2 hurricane, and New England as a 100 mph category 2 hurricane. Donna at its peak had been a 160 mph category 5 hurricane
41. Irene (1999) $ 800 Million Irene made landfall in Florida as a 85 mph category 1 hurricane. At its peak Irene was a 110 mph category 2 hurricane
42. Alberto (1994) $775 Million Alberto made landfall in Florida as a 65 mph tropical storm which was its peak. Alberto caused lots of flood damage
43. *Diane (1955) $755 Million, Diane made landfall in North Carolina as a 80 mph category 1 hurricane. At its peak Diane was a 120 mph category 3 hurricane
44. Erin (1995) $750 Million. Erin made two landfalls in Florida the first one was as a 85 mph category 1 hurricane, the second one was at its peak which was a 100 mph category 2 hurricane
45. * Kate (1985) $750 Million. Kate made landfall in in Florida as a 105 mph category 2 hurricane. Kate was a 115 mph category 3 hurricane at its peak
46. Fay (2008) $580 million. Fay made 4 landfalls in Florida at its peak which was a 70 mph tropical storm
47. *Eloise (1975) $580 Million. Eloise made landfall in Florida at its peak which was a 120 mph category 3 hurricane
48. Allison (1989) $500 Million. Allison made landfall in Texas at its peak which was a 60 mph tropical storm.
49. Carol (1954) $460 Million. Carol made landfall in New England at its peak which was a 115 mph category 3 hurricane
50. Hazel (1954) $420 million. Hazel, made landfall in South and North Carolina at its peak which was a 150 mph category 4 hurricane
